Walked up to your usual Bitcoin ATM lately and found a dark screen, a “temporarily unavailable” sign, or just an empty spot where the machine used to be? You’re not alone, and it’s not your local gas station’s fault. 2026 has been the year the Bitcoin ATM industry got turned upside down.

In the space of a few months, the biggest operator in North America went bankrupt and switched off every one of its machines overnight. Another large kiosk network agreed with state regulators to pull its machines. Three states banned crypto kiosks entirely. By the fall, roughly one in three Bitcoin ATMs in the United States was gone.

So if you buy bitcoin with cash, the obvious question is: who’s left? Here’s the short version. RockItCoin is still here, still running more than 2,000 Bitcoin ATMs, and still giving you a second way to buy with cash at retail stores through RockItCoin Go. The longer version, including what happened and what it means for your bitcoin, is below.

What happened to Bitcoin ATMs in 2026?

The biggest operator went bust

On May 18, 2026, Bitcoin Depot, the largest Bitcoin ATM operator in North America with roughly 9,700 kiosks, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and took its entire network offline the same day. No wind-down period, no “last chance to use your local machine.” The company said it would sell its assets through the court process and pointed to state transaction limits, bans and compliance costs as the reasons. For customers, thousands of machines in gas stations and convenience stores simply stopped working between one trip and the next.

Another big network is packing up

In October 2026, another large crypto kiosk operator settled with dozens of state financial regulators and agreed to shut down its kiosks in those states. That’s thousands more places to buy bitcoin with cash quietly disappearing from grocery stores and shopping centers.

Three states said “no more”

Indiana banned crypto kiosks in March 2026. Tennessee’s ban took effect July 1, and Minnesota’s followed on August 1. Plenty of other states chose fee caps, daily limits and licensing rules instead of an outright ban. If you live in one of those three states, no operator can legally run a Bitcoin ATM there, and that includes us.

Add it up, and the map looks very different

According to CoinATMRadar data, the United States started 2026 with about 30,600 Bitcoin ATMs. By the end of June it was down to about 20,200, and by late September it was hovering near 19,500. That is a lot of empty corners.

First things first: is my bitcoin safe?

If your bitcoin is in a wallet you control, yes. Completely. Bitcoin lives on the blockchain, not inside any company’s kiosk. A Bitcoin ATM is a place to buy it, nothing more. Once a purchase lands in your wallet, it’s yours, no matter what happens to the operator afterward.

This is the single best argument for keeping your bitcoin in a wallet you control, such as the one built into the RockItCoin app, instead of leaving it in an account that belongs to someone else. If you had a purchase still pending with an operator that shut down, contact that operator directly or watch for notices from the bankruptcy court.

So who still sells bitcoin for cash?

The list of national cash-to-bitcoin providers is a lot shorter than it was in January. RockItCoin is one of the operators still standing, and we’ve been at this since 2015. Here’s how you can buy from us.

Option 1: a RockItCoin Bitcoin ATM

More than 2,000 machines across the country, in grocery stores, convenience stores and gas stations. You walk up, scan your wallet, insert cash, and your bitcoin is on its way, usually within minutes. The location finder will point you to the nearest one. Fees vary by location and are typically around 20% per transaction, and you’ll see the fee on the screen before you confirm, never after. In California, the state caps the fee at 15% and limits purchases to $1,000 per day.

Option 2: RockItCoin Go, at a retail store near you

No machine nearby? Or would you rather pay less and wait a few minutes? RockItCoin Go lets you load cash at a participating retail store and finish your bitcoin purchase in the RockItCoin app. It’s the cheapest way to convert cash to bitcoin: a 7.5% conversion fee plus a $4.95 retail service fee per cash load, shown up front. Loads are $20 to $500 each, up to three loads and $1,500 per day, and $5,000 per month. Limits vary by state. Load your cash, and the purchase typically completes in the app in about 20 minutes.

How to pick an operator you can trust

Fewer operators doesn’t mean every one left is the same. Before you feed cash into any machine, check for these:

  • Fees on the screen before you confirm. If you have to guess what you’re paying, walk away.
  • Identity verification. Legitimate operators verify who you are. That’s the law working as intended, not a hassle to dodge.
  • A wallet you control. Buy to your own wallet, so your bitcoin never depends on a company staying in business.
  • Scam warnings you can’t miss. Never buy bitcoin because someone on the phone told you to. If you feel pressured, stop and read our guide to staying safe at Bitcoin ATMs.
  • A track record and a real phone number. An operator that’s been around for years and answers the phone beats one that showed up last month. Ours is 1 (888) 70-BITCOIN.
